Dubai approves $8bn storm drains, construction
to begin immediately

The project covers all areas of Dubai emirate and will be completed in phases by 2033

Dubai is going ahead with plans for an $8 billion (AED30 billion) stormwater drainage system that
will cover the entire emirate, with construction to commence immediately.
On Monday, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the
UAE and Ruler of Dubai, approved the Tasreef project aimed at developing Dubai’s rainwater drainage network.

The project will be implemented by Dubai Municipality and completed in phases by 2033.

When complete, it will be able to handle 20 million cubic metres of water per day with a flow capacity of 230 cubic
metres per second through the tunneled system.

Tasreef is a continuation of the drainage projects launched in 2019 that cover the Expo Dubai, Al Maktoum
International Airport City, and Jebel Ali areas, the emirate’s media officer reported.
