Grandweld's green vessels: Setting sail for the future
The global maritime industry, responsible for transporting 90% of the world’s
commercial goods, is undergoing a significant transformation driven by technological
advancements and the increasing need for environmental sustainability. As Abki
explains, advanced vessels are becoming essential in meeting the demands of modern
shipping.
Advanced technologies such as AI, IoT, and blockchain are changing ship operations,
offering solutions that enhance navigation, automation, and real-time data analysis.
These innovations are critical for improving operational efficiency. Abki states, “The
integration of new technologies is transforming ship operations, enhancing navigation
automation and real-time data analysis. Such innovations enable precise route
planning, enhancing fuel efficiency and predictive maintenance while reducing
downtime and boosting operational effectiveness.”
Sustainability is also at the forefront of this transformation. The maritime industry is
aligning itself with global environmental goals to reduce its ecological impact. Abki
notes that “the industry is heavily investing in eco-friendly operations,” which will be
pivotal in achieving the complete decarbonisation goal set by the United Nations
Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) for 2050. However, he also
acknowledges the challenges, stating, “Achieving complete decarbonisation by 2050
will require substantial investments, likely increasing logistics costs and posing
challenges for shipping-dependent regions.”
A key regional maritime hub
The UAE’s strategic location at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa has made it a
crucial hub for global maritime trade. Grandweld Shipyards, based in Dubai Maritime
City, plays a pivotal role in enhancing the UAE’s maritime prominence.
Grandweld’s advanced infrastructure is a critical factor in its success. Spanning over
55,000 square metres, the shipyard boasts cutting-edge technology and facilities. This
allows the company to repair more than 30 vessels simultaneously, ensuring high
operational efficiency. “Our facility, the largest in Dubai Maritime City, features
advanced infrastructure, including a 6,000-ton ship lift and a 720-ton boat hoist,” says
Abki. “This expansive setup allows us to efficiently serve diverse clients across key
shipping routes.”
Beyond its impressive physical infrastructure, Grandweld’s commitment to
sustainability is another factor driving its success. The shipyard is focused on
minimising its environmental impact while maximising operational effectiveness
through technological innovation. Abki emphasises, “Grandweld’s utilisation of
advanced technology and modern infrastructure helps enhance operational efficiency
