Turning Kitchen Waste into Clean Energy

In a bold move towards a greener future, Dubai is transforming household and restaurant
waste oil into biodiesel

Waste cooking oil, at times, poured down kitchen sinks across Dubai, could soon be providing
power. Dubai Municipality, in partnership with BiOD Technology FZCO, has launched a major
environmental programme to collect used cooking oil and convert it into clean, renewable fuel,
advancing the emirate’s circular economy and sustainability goals.

According to Gulf News, the project, a collaboration between Dubai Municipality and BiOD
Technology FZCO, a subsidiary of DUBAL Holding, aims to collect used cooking oil (UCO) and fats,
oils, and grease (FOG) and convert them into B100 biodiesel, a cleaner fuel alternative that helps

reduce carbon emissions. The agreement was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU), granting BiOD Technology the authority to manage oil collection and processing operations
across the emirate.
