12/4/23, 1:14 AM Baker Hughes unveils revolutionary ThermaStim for enhanced geothermal energy production - Oil & Gas Middle East
the formation under high-temperature conditions typical of geothermal formations. This
unique feature ensures deeper penetration into the reservoir with minimal fluid volumes,
optimizing stimulation processes.
ThermaStim stands out for its cost-effectiveness. Conventional solutions often require
significant amounts of corrosion inhibitors, comprising up to 40 percent or more of total
fluid costs. In contrast, ThermaStim’s in-situ acid generation, triggered by temperature,
protects wellbore tubulars and downhole equipment without expensive corrosion packages.
This approach not only saves costs but also enhances wellbore integrity and metallurgy
safety, allowing operators to concentrate on achieving production targets.
The design of ThermaStim emphasizes safety and operational efficiency. Eliminating the
need for acid tanks, the technology is safer to handle onsite, significantly reducing carbon
emissions and the environmental and logistical challenges of transporting large acid
volumes. Its in-situ design also lessens health, safety, and environmental (HSE) concerns, as it
avoids the handling or pumping of live acids.
Rodrigo Farias, vice president of Pressure Pumping at Baker Hughes, commented on the
launch, stating, “ThermaStim represents Baker Hughes’ unwavering commitment to
pioneering in the energy sector, especially in our 40-year-strong geothermal energy domain.
This unique geothermal extraction approach enables our clients to explore new frontiers,
aligning with the dynamic needs of the energy transition. Our goal is to harness the Earth’s
power in a manner that’s safer and more efficient.”
Baker Hughes’ innovation with ThermaStim is poised to become a cornerstone for energy
producers and stakeholders focused on advancing geothermal production practices. By
empowering operators to fully leverage geothermal energy, ThermaStim not only minimizes
environmental risks but also reduces the carbon footprint, aligning with global sustainability
goals.
