Guildhall and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in
global top 10 for performing arts

Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland are among the British
institutions ranked in the top 10 worldwide for performing arts.
According to the 2020 QS World University Rankings, an annual list of the top 100 universities in the
world to study certain subjects, Guildhall is in sixth place, with RCS in ninth.
They are among four UK colleges in the top 10 for performing arts. The Royal College of Music and the
Royal Academy of Music, both in London, are in second and fourth place respectively.
The QS rankings cover 48 subjects and are judged in part by a global survey of nearly 95,000 academics
and 45,000 employers.
The 2020 publication marks a return to the top 10 for RCS, which last year was in equal 19th place.
RCS principal Jeffrey Sharkey said: “As the national conservatoire of Scotland, based in Glasgow – a
welcoming and creative city – this top-10 ranking is welcome recognition of our contribution to
developing artists and creative producers who can, and do, make a positive impact on their
communities and across the world.”
Guildhall, the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music all retained their top-10 spots
from the 2019 rankings.
The list was topped by New York’s Juilliard School, while other high-ranking institutions included New
York University and the Curtis Institute of Music in the US, and Vienna’s University of Music and
Performing Arts.
Other British drama schools on the 100-strong list include the Royal Central School of Speech and
Drama and Birmingham City University, home to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, as well as
universities offering performance courses, such as Cambridge, Oxford, Warwick and Bristol.
