When the Second World War broke out, the then sixteen-year-old conductor Neville
Marriner was called upon to play the violin in the London Symphony Orchestra. He
performed at the Proms with Henry Wood, and after the war he gave concerts under
the baton of Toscanini, Furtwängler, Karajan, Klemperer, Britten and Pierre Monteux,
who said he would make a good conductor. Much of what counts as conducting is
imitation and allusion – Marriner learned from the best.
