This box of 80 CDs was mainly made in London with the Academy Of St Martin In The
Fields, which Marriner founded in 1958.
I found the manner in which they played a range of different pieces a testament to a true
understanding of how music should go, and a real ability by Marriner to get musicians to
do what he wanted.
His gifts enabled him to always sound at home whatever he was conducting. This box set
moves effortlessly from Mozart and Haydn, etc, to modern pieces you would not
necessarily expect Marriner to have an interest in, such as a lovely Elgar album. Even
more unexpected, there’s a mass of little lightweight pieces.
This is a really special set of recordings. No one who loves music well prepared and well
played from a musician who understood all the nuances imposed by a wide range of
styles can fail to enjoy this.
