– 1962 – Former British model and singer Nick Kamen (real name Ivor Neville
Kamen), known for the song "I Promised Myself" (d. 2021)
– 1966 – British actress and singer Samantha Fox is born.
– 1980 – Jean-Paul Sartre, French existentialist philosopher, writer and literary
critic died; he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1964, which he
refused to raise (b. 1905)
– 1986 – Jean Genet, French novelist and playwright (b. 1910) dies
1990 – Greta Garbo, Swedish actress (b. 1905)
– 1998: Pol Pot (real name: Saloth Sar), dictator of Cambodia between 1976
and 1979 and leader of the communist guerrilla Khmer Rouge, died
(apparently of natural causes); the regime installed by force adopted a series
of measures that led to the deaths of more than 1.7 million Cambodians (about
20 percent of the country's population), several million Cambodians were
arrested, and others went into exile; In 1979 his reign of terror was overthrown
by Vietnamese troops (b. 1925)
– 2000 – Edward Gorey, American illustrator (known for his works in pencil
and ink) and set designer (b. 1925)
– 2012: Australian athlete Murray Rose, one of the most important names in
world swimming, died; won 4 Olympic medals in swimming (in Melbourne, in
1956 – in the 400 meters, 1,500 meters and 4×200 meters freestyle – and
four years later, in Rome – in the 400 meters freestyle); he is the first man to
swim 1500 m under 18 minutes at the age of only 17, and throughout his
career he set 15 world records (b. 1939, in Scotland)
– 2013 – American actor Richard LeParmentier, known for his role as Admiral
Motti in "Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope" (b. 1946)
