artificial boy with scissors for hands heads off on a UK tour. Although it’s told with a cartoon
palette and larky goings-on, at its heart it’s a sad tale about an ultimate outsider and what it
means to be different.

New York City Ballet
A real catch, this. It may not be the full company, but it is a wonderful chance to appreciate
some of America’s finest dancers. A mixed bill brings together Duo Concertant —
choreographed by George Balanchine, who founded New York City Ballet in 1948 — and a trio
of contemporary creations by Justin Peck, Pam Tanowitz and Kyle Abraham.

Carmen
Not one but two stagings based on the Bizet opera are coming to Sadler’s Wells. First up is
English National Ballet’s psychological version by the Swedish choreographer Johan Inger.
Then in July Carlos Acosta presents his robust Carmen staging performed by his Havana-based
contemporary dance troupe, Acosta Danza.

Frederick Ashton celebration
The Royal Ballet honours its founder choreographer with a triple bill of some of his finest
ballets: Les Rendezvous (1933), a light-hearted look at friends who meet in a park; The
Dream (1964), Ashton’s masterly distillation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream;
and Rhapsody (1980), a scintillating work set to Rachmaninoff.

State Ballet of Georgia
With the Royal Ballet and English National Ballet already performing Swan Lake in London in
2024, the State Ballet of Georgia will have to offer something special to compete when it makes
its London debut with its own version. Staged by the well-respected Alexei Fadeyechev and
Nina Ananiashvili, the former Bolshoi star who runs the company, it promises to be lavish.
