Britain has a rich classical music heritage, from the compositions by Thomas Tallis for

the court of Henry VIII to Elgar’s early 20th-century concertos. You can hear the classical

world’s enduring works being performed all over the country: at outdoor summer festivals, in

composers’ houses and grand cathedrals. Here’s where to start.

Come to this coastal town for the composer Benjamin Britten’s former home, the Red House, as

well as year-round concerts from visiting trios and quartets (£11; tours from March to

November; brittenpearsarts.org). At Snape Maltings, a huge arts and retail complex by the River

Alde, you can join “come and sing” days led by contemporary composers such as John

Rutter. Swing by in summer for June’s Aldeburgh Music Festival for world premieres of new
works (tickets from £10; brittenpearsarts.org). When you’ve soaked up the sounds, go for a walk
