A break in this Peak District spa town is a delight at any time of year, but it’s most sonorous in
July, when the annual music festival comes to town. This year’s line-up includes the pianist Paul
Lewis, Verdi’s opera Ernani, the South African soprano Golda Schultz, Haydn’s La
Canterina and a masterclass with the internationally renowned conductor Antonio Pappano

Pump Room from its time as a 19th-century spa retreat and check out the eerie stalactites at
