• Stunning images as Queen Anne arrives in Liverpool
The live entertainment kicked off at 2.30pm with street theatre and choir
performances ahead of the ritual smashing of a bottle of Champagne on the
hull of the Queen Anne.
Spice Girl Mel C was among five icons chosen to perform the custom on
behalf of the City of Liverpool, along with world champions heptathlete
Katarina Johnson-Thomson, broadcaster and community leader Ngunan
Adamu, local restaurant entrepreneur Natalie Haywood and Liverpool music
and cultural legend Jayne Casey.
The free event was headlined by iconic Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, whose
performance at 5pm was eagerly anticipated, but the operatic superstar only
delivered two songs.
Evening celebrations will commence at 8.30pm, with performances from DJ
Craig Charles and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic
Orchestra. Fireworks will explode over the River Mersey from 10.15pm, as
the city says goodbye to Queen Anne.
