The hugely charismatic conductor, composer and music educator took the helm for 11
hugely successful years from 1958 onwards. As well as some wonderful series introducing
young people to classical music and the orchestra, the results included one of the very first
and most-respected cycles of the Mahler symphonies.
Indeed, Bernstein and the '60s NY Phil can take much of the credit for the vast surge of
interest in the great, but previously little performed composer.

'A triumph, to be listened to especially by anyone who feels they don’t have an urgent need
to listen to these works again.'
