A milestone album in the annals of confrontational and cathartic songwriting, Tori Amos’s
visceral debut, which is being reissued on vinyl in a two-LP edition, established her instantly as
a distinctive and uncompromising new force in music. Shorn of their subject matter, the
American’s ornate, piano-led songs cleaved to traditional structures and staples, recalling the
gothic-tinged baroque’n’roll and blowsy balladry of Kate Bush, Stevie Nicks and other
forebears. But the lyrics, as with those artists, refuse to play nice; on the contrary, they demand
that you pay attention, however uncomfortable the experience can be. On songs such
as Girl, Silent All These Years and above all Me and a Gun, which recounts the horrendous
details of the singer’s rape at knifepoint after a gig in Los Angeles, Amos tears away the curtain
and steps defiantly into the light.
