BBC Proms 2020: Exploring Beethoven’s Seventh

The potential erosion of Proms traditions has become a fevered topic of national debate in recent
weeks, but this live, audience-free broadcast from the Royal Albert Hall should offer some
respite. Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony — composed after the conductor lost his hearing —
has its own place in Proms history, being the final piece directed by the founder-conductor
Henry Wood before his death in 1944. The Aurora Orchestra tonight pays homage to that
heritage by playing the piece from memory — although presumably not one of having been at
the Forties performance.
