If Simon Rattle ever gives up the day job, a new career awaits as a positive-thinking coach.
Down the phone from his Berlin home he does not quite come up with “when the going gets
tough, the tough get going” but that is the message he conveys. His band, the London Symphony
Orchestra, survived two world wars and innumerable financial crashes. The present-day players
are damned if they will let a pandemic put them out of business.
