So lockdown has had a silver lining: allowing more time to plan fresh approaches?
“Yes,” Rattle replies. “My conducting colleagues are coming up with all sorts of brilliant
suggestions. Sibelius’s Cassazione, for instance, is a strange, wonderful piece I’d never heard.
So thank you, Susanna Malkki, for including that in her LSO concert [November 5]. And social-
distancing rules have nudged us into presenting familiar repertoire in fresher ways.
Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances, for instance [which Rattle conducts on September 23], actually work
better with smaller string sections.”
