caliber of Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, Kurt Weil, Joaquin Rodrigo
and Charles Ives. In press release sent to the press, she talks about this
album:
"There is a real melancholy in this work that only a certain type of
trumpet can achieve. Throughout the album's repertoire, I tried to show
this through the unique lens of this instrument which is the wonderful
bridge between the classic composers and the great son of jazz. For
many of us, the feeling behind Quiet City is pertinent to the moment as
we emerge from the loneliness of the pandemic and enter another
chapter of darkness in today's turbulent world."
Alison Balsom is accompanied in Quiet City by the Britten Symphony
Orchestra, conducted by conductor Scott Stroman. Three of the musical
arrangements were written by the late conductor Gil Evans and
originally recorded by the not least nostaliable Miles Davis. At the age of
43, she is married to award-winning British filmmaker Sam Mendes,
known for films such as American Beauty (1999) and 1917 (2019).
