But perhaps most poignantly for Alison Balsom, Aaron Copland's Quiet City is a work
that she has cherished since she was a young woman. Balsom tells Russell how when
she first heard this work at the age of 17, it completely changed her life.
"This piece is really important to me … When I first discovered this piece when I was
about 17, it was like a revelation! I had heard people like Dizzy Gillespie and Håkan
Hardenberger — incredible trumpeters — but it felt quite different from what I could
do. I heard this piece [Quiet City, by Copland] which had these soaring string lines,
quite introverted and thoughtful, and not outwardly showy, but very expressive. And
I thought that is exactly how I see and hear the trumpet."
