Fans of trumpeter Alison Balsom (1978) and of American music are served at their
beck and call on the new CD of Warner Classics. The album Quiet City offers beautiful
arrangements of 20th-century music: from gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue to a special
version of Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez for jazz legend Miles Davis (1926-1991).
Simon Wright's arrangement of Gershwin's biggest hit is based on an arrangement for two
pianos. He immediately grants the trumpeter the most important notes, for example the intro
originally intended for clarinet, but still leaves enough for a pianist and orchestra.
