Electra Perivolaris Composer
• Can you share with us your chosen orchestration for your new
chamber opera and why?
When I was first approached by Stevie Higgins from Theatre of Sound,
Rhuti Carr from the London Sinfonietta and Nina Swann from Live Music
Now they suggested I compose for 4 instruments and 2 voices. I chose
to compose for flute, harp, viola, cello, soprano voice and baritone voice
as I felt this was the perfect colour palette to express ‘the gossamer
threads of memory’ which Stevie Higgins had described as central to his
reimagination of Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle, seen from the perspective
of the character of Judith, living with dementia.
