Magnetic Hill is a natural mystery—or, to
some, an optical illusion—you can find in the
northwestern part of the city. Cars driven up
this hill defy gravity by rolling backwards, but
in an uphill motion. Even the water bodies
in the area flow backwards! You’ll have to
experience it to see for yourself whether this
seemingly magical hill is real or just a trick of
the eye.
What to do in Moncton
Moncton offers a mix of culture, outdoor activities, cuisines, and learning centres all year round. It’s easy to get around
the city’s core by foot or bike, but for attractions around the Greater Moncton Area, you’ll likely need a vehicle. The
only thing you’ll have to worry about is planning your itinerary and giving yourself enough time to explore all the
top spots. To get you started, you can visit Tourism Moncton for more information about upcoming events, culinary
recommendations, shopping, and accommodations. Let’s look at some here!
For nature lovers, Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park is worth the 30 minute drive from Moncton. Located 38 kilometres
away, this is where you’ll find the record breaking Bay of Fundy tides and the recognizable flower pot rock formations.
Your entry ticket is valid for two consecutive days so you’ll get the chance to see both the high and low tides! The park
has walking trails and two beaches for your enjoyment.
Centennial Park is perfect for a solo or family outing with activities ranging from biking, skating, and lawn bowling, to
rock climbing and snowshoeing. Just remember to bring a helmet and elbow pads if you plan to bike or skate here as
it’s the law. You can also check out TreeGo for aerial adventures including zip lining.
• Butterfly World (The Boardwalk) is an indoor garden filled with pretty blooms and butterflies. The spot is located
across from Magnetic Hill and features all kinds of summer activities. You can spend the day here and ride a go-
kart, try out the batting cages, take part in a round of mini-putt, and cool down with some ice cream.
• If you want to see more than butterflies, you can get your wildlife fix with a visit to the Magnetic Hill Zoo. The zoo
and education centre hosts nearly 600 animals, making it one of the largest in Atlantic Canada. The zoo’s hours
and fees change according to the season, so be sure to visit the website before your visit.
• Magic Mountain Water Park is the largest of its kind in Atlantic Canada. You can choose from four different zones
(SplashZone, FunZone, GolfZone, and TekZoneto) or you can grab a 4Zone pass to enjoy everything the park has
to offer. The park is open daily but you will need to make reservations before you make the trip.
• The arts and culture scene in Moncton is quite impressive. The renovated vaudeville house Capitol Theatre
regularly presents plays, musicals, stand-up comedy shows, drag performances, concerts, and more.
• Music lovers can catch a weekly outdoor show
in Victoria Park all summer long. The shows, which
take place on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m., are part
of the Acoustica Summer Concert Series.
• If the brief history of Moncton earlier in this
article caught your interest, you can learn more
about the city’s beginnings at Resurgo Place. Here
you’ll find a museum and heritage sites such as
the Free Meeting House and the Thomas Williams
House.
