Hexagons, Octogons and Honeycombs
LEFT: Hexagonal Mosaic No later than 1940s. eBay purchase from Grants Pass, Oregon. 65"x75" Fabric:
Cottons. Batting: Heavy cotton. Backing: Cotton muslin. Edge: The back is brought to the front ½’ and
caught by hand. Piecing: By hand in ½” pieces, 12 pieces per star. Quilting: Clamshell. Condition: Top is
excellent. There is a brown age stain on one corner of the back. Comment: The quilt seems to fit the 1890s
to 1900 fad for making quilts with the tiniest pieces possible, but from the colors I think later, 1920-1930s.
A woman in her 70s sold the quilt at a garage sale. She said that it had belonged to her mother, but she
didn’t know who made it or where it came from before that. The seller counted 4,600 stars. Has 12 pieces
per star. Counting them side-by-side and not in a zig-zag patter, I get 35 stars wide and 45 stars long, for
19,440 pieces.
