Top Ladies of Distinction Remembers…

                                  Lady Pennie E. Perry was the oldest “active” charter member of

                                             The Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc, Wendell NC Chapter. She received
                                             The “Everyday Hero Humanitarian” Award; served as the Community
                                             Partnership Chairperson and was a dedicated Top Teen mentor, traveling
                                             with them to most of the Annual Leadership Conferences in Area IV.
                                             Lady Pennie graduated in 1936 from Shaw University in Raleigh, North
                                             Carolina, the oldest Historically Black College and University in the South,
                                             with a Bachelors of Science degree. She also received a Masters of Science
                                             degree from the University of Michigan and was the first Black to live in
                                             their dormitory. She received a second Masters in Library Science from
                                             Syracuse University in New York and a PhD. from The University of Chi-
                                             cago.
She was the Charlotte, North Carolina Chapter Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority President from 1987-1991. She re-
cently received The Community ICON Award and was the first female deacon ordained at The Riley Hill Baptist
Church, Wendell, North Carolina. Lady Pennie was inducted in the Wake Baptist Missionary’s “Hall of Fame”
and served as a member of the “Concerned Citizens for Children in Education”, an organization founded to assist
in closing the achievement gap between Black students and White students. Lady Pennie served on The Wake
County Planning Board and was very actively involved in Sit-ins during The Civil Rights Movement and worked
the polling place.
