Teen Bryson Wimbley Completes Internship with Cleveland Clinic
Top Teen Bryson Wimbley, a 16 year old student at St. Martin DePorres High School in Cleveland, Ohio,
and a Top Teen in the Greater Cleveland Chapter, completed a
rigorous six-week internship with the Cleveland Clinic’s
Northeast Ohio Research Education Medical Alliance
(NEOREMA). Students are chosen based on high academics
and from groups typically underrepresented in biomedical
sciences and public service as shown by the National Science
Foundation. Teen Bryson, who began working with the
Cleveland Clinic two years prior to his Internship, was selected
from over 100 students from Cleveland and East Cleveland to
complete his internship as a part of the Louis Stokes Intern
Program in Public Service. Launched in partnership with
PNC Bank and supported by Youth Opportunities Unlimited
and Effective Leadership Academy, all community
partners of the Greater Cleveland Chapter of TLOD,
this internship program honors Congressman Louis Stokes’
legacy of public service and his longstanding commitment to the
youth of Cleveland.
During this six-week internship, Teen Bryson had the
opportunity to work and learn alongside caregivers at
Cleveland Clinic. He spent his first two weeks participating in
a work experience leadership camp and the following four
weeks working in non-clinical departments of Cleveland Clinic
like law enforcement, administration, information
technology, marketing, human resources and building
operations.
Teen Bryson said “The Louis Stokes Internship has been one of the most wonderful experiences I’ve been
exposed to. Working alongside professionals in the health and public service fields has provided me with
many great opportunities within the Cleveland Clinic.” My goal is to become a law enforcement officer
with a medical background so that I can become a first responder and help others quickly.” “During my
first year at the Cleveland Clinic, I worked with the Cleveland Clinic police department; with my mentor
Officer Dark who was assigned to the crime prevention community outreach unit. Our goals were to come
up with ways to prevent crime and train the community on how to protect themselves. My second year, I
worked with the General Pediatrics department where I participated in two major projects; 1) helping to
scale up a process to staff and service a Full Service Mobile Unit with a full clinic on a bus that will service
every school and make it much easier for youth to get to the doctor; and 2) working with doctors alongside
the Lakewood High school In-School Clinic so student don’t have to leave school just to go to the doctor.
The Internship helped me understand the skills and responsibilities that I need.” he said. Teen Bryson has
been a Top Teen for 2 years and serves as the 2nd Vice President of the Chapter. The Greater Cleveland
Chapter of TLOD and Top Teens have selected the Volunteerism and Leadership component of the
Investing Mission and M.O.M.E.N.T.U.M. program as a focus for 2015-2019 Program years.
