Teen Valerie Nelson
Teen Valarie Nelson- Betts is the epitome
of academic excellence. During an on the spot
decision interview with St. Mary’s University
in San Antonio, Texas, she was accepted into
the University and given a $10,000 Yearly
Scholarship. Instant Decision is a process
that allows high school seniors or rising
seniors, to apply, interview and receive
an admissions decision all in a single day. This reduces the entire admissions process to include, in
some cases, financial or merit aid. Participants follow a set program that includes taking a campus
tour, sitting in on classes and meeting faculty, visit athletic facilities and sampling campus food,
while parents attend their own scheduled activities. Teen Valarie Nelson-Betts is a senior at Valle
Verde Early College High School. She is a member of the Police Explorer’s Club, the Movie club,
and the Craft Club. She intends to major in Biological Sciences and her ultimate career goal is to
become a Forensic Pathologist. She currently serves at the Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Chair for
the El Paso Chapter of Top Teens of America. Teen Valarie is the creative mind behind our Sickle
Cell Fundraising Dart Board, which has raised almost $500 for Sickle Cell Disease Awareness
Association (SCDAA) over the past two years.
