I have learned new ways to teach music, new ways to engage students and I have gained insight not only from my mentor but from across other schools.”

The Song Room responded to the complex educational environment of 2022 by expanding and improving evidence-based initiatives to transform school communities. With a focus on providing all children with high-quality education opportunities, regardless of their postcode or circumstance, The Song Room grew program delivery by 24% in 2022.
The development and roll out of an innovative new wellbeing program, Kaleidoscope, to 100 Victorian primary schools demonstrated the organisation’s ability to read the environment, listen, and respond swiftly with agility and expertise.
In a huge year of impact, the wellbeing of both students and teachers filtered through every program.
A variety of challenges impacted aspects of program delivery. Floods, COVID-19 outbreaks in school communities, disengaged students, limited access to Casual Relief Teachers and high rates of teacher absenteeism, were most notable challenges this year.
Throughout, The Song Room responded with flexible solutions tailored to each school’s specific context
and sensitive to the needs of time-poor teachers. Consultation was our super power. Strong contingency planning and risk mitigation strategies were used to ensure schools remained engaged in the program and received all aspects of program delivery as planned.
Bucking an industry trend, The Song Room’s professional development sessions were highly valued and well attended by teachers and Teaching Artists. Providing practical skills and pragmatic guidance to overwhelmed teachers was a highlight of the year.
Looking forward, the demand from teachers and school leaders for more Song Room programs shows that while we are on the right track, the need is as critical as ever.
