Each year The Song Room reviews and enhances its Deadly Arts program design based on best practice examples, relevant research and community consultation.
For nine years The Song Room has delivered Deadly Arts (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture and Arts Program), designed and led by First Nations artists. In 2022 these programs continued in WA and NSW supporting the development of authentic relationships between schools and local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members through the arts.
The launch of the digital Noongar-led Deadly Arts education resources on ARTS:LIVE in February 2022 brought 63 hours of accessible, appropriate cultural learning to classrooms across Australia. Consultation was sought from Noongar community members throughout the project to design online lessons and activities, featuring six local Noongar Artists. The project also included the direct participation of 1578 students (including 341 Indigenous students) across six Perth based primary schools.
The Deadly Arts in Victoria Scoping Project included consultation with over 77 leading Indigenous artists, educators, schools, organisations and communities. The project highlighted the demand for First Nations-
led programs in the state, and a need for teacher professional learning in culturally responsive pedagogy. The project’s recommendations
have informed the Deadly Arts implementation plan, and enhanced organisational capacity to deliver Deadly Arts at increased scale.
