BrakeFluids
Amongall of thefluidslistedabove, brakefluidoil changerecommendationswerethemost consistent. Brakefluidsareeither DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluidsin North American passenger vehicles. These are polyalkylene glycol (PAG) synthetic fluids. A unique property of this fluid is that it is hygroscopic – it attracts water. The advantage in absorbing water is that it keeps water from collecting in calipers and wheel cylinders. However, by holding onto the water, the brake fluid's boiling point drops, rust inhibitor additives prematurely deplete and the system becomes susceptible to internal corrosion if left too long in the system.
Interval-based Recommendations:
When available, interval-based change recommendations varied from approximately every 25,000 to 35,000 miles or every two to three years for OEMs. Aftermarket articles recommended 15,000 to 60,000 miles or one to three years.
Condition-based Recommendations:
The following standards and documents have been reviewed in determining the condemning limits and recommendations listed below:
1. FMVSS116-FederalMotorVehicleSafetyStandard
2. ISO4925-International Organizationof Standards-RoadVehicles-Specificationof non-petroleum-base brake fluids for hydraulic systems
3. SAE J1703 - Society of Automotive Engineers Service Maintenance of Brake Fluids in Motor VehicleBrakeSystems
4. SA E J1704 - Soci ety of A utomoti ve Engi neers Recommended Practi ce A pri l 2004
5. BorateEster BrakeFluidsSociety of AutomotiveEngineers
6. Herguth Laboratories – Evaluation of Field Test Methods for DOT-3 and DOT-4 Brake Fluids Cleanliness and Fluid Degradation
