Example Tortoises are a member of the turtle family. There are
around 49 different kinds of tortoise. Some tortoises can
live to over 100 years old!
1 They can live most continents except for
Antarctica because they need places that are warm
enough for them to lay their eggs.
Tortoises have very special shells. This shell is a part of
2 the tortoise’s spine which means can’t come
off. They can feel it when they are touched on their shell.
Most tortoises are happy to be alone. So in the wild, it’s
normal for them to be by themselves. They like to walk
3 around in the daytime and sleep night.
4 Like turtles, tortoises very slow animals.
In fact, their average walking speed is only 0.2-0.5
kilometres per hour!
Tortoises can be very different sizes. Some of them are
really small. But there are other tortoises, like the giant
5 tortoise, can grow to over 1.2 metres
in length!
