military perspective and accompanied by the editors’ detailed introduction,
which elaborates the political and military framework of the affair, British
operational planning, Maunsell’s background, and the region’s geo-strategic
significance prior to World War I. Multiple original maps, drawings, and
photographs enliven the written text.
In addition to enhancing our knowledge about historical Palestine, the
book also contributes to the understanding of British interests and policy in
the Levant and of the significance of Palestine in imperial eyes. Northern
Palestine, being a part of the strategic land route between the Mediterranean
and the Arabian Sea held the attention of the British General Staff much
more than the other parts of the country, including the holy city of Jerusalem.
This book demonstrates that the significance of Palestine in the Empire’s
geo-strategy prior to the Great War emerged first and foremost from
pragmatic considerations rather than from a spiritual ideal.
