BUILDING A WINNING TEAM
  WAS IN PERTH RECENTLY CON-
ducting training at Car Craft house for some of their mem- bers. I was asked to talk about leadership. It’s not something often talked about or even thought about
when it comes to running a business.
A great team is a direct result of a great leader. The training was so well re- ceived it made me realise that under- standing more about leadership could
make a huge impact on a bigger audi- ence – that’s you.
Before we get stuck into what I be- lieve are the six keys to building a winning team I want to cover severa myths about what it takes to be a good leader.
• A leader must be charismatic and have a commanding presence.
• A leader must always be in control and never show any weakness.
• Leaders are born, not made, and cer- tain people are naturally better suited for leadership roles.
These myths can lead to narrow and limited beliefs of what it truly means to be a good leader. In reality, good leader-
ship is a complex and multifaceted con- cept that involves a combination of per- sonal qualities, interpersonal skills, and situational awareness.
Effective leaders can come in all shapes and sizes, and when I asked my training group what they thought the most impor- tant qualities for leadership success are, they said: adaptability; empathy; self- awareness; and a commitment to continu- ous learning and improvement.
Everyone on the team
should feel valued and i i n n c cl l u u d d e e d d a a n n d d t t h h a a t t t t h h e e i i r r
contributions are appreciated.”
As a collision repair shop owner, you face a number of challenges when it comes to building a successful and effective team. From dealing with tight deadlines, tight budgets and staff shortages to managing the expectations of customers. It is essen- tial that shop owners and managers have a
team that is well-structured, motivated and committed to achieving a common goal. Here are six keys to building a winning team in collision repair shops.
STRONG LEADERSHIP
The first key to building a winning team is having strong leadership. A good lead- er will set the tone for the team and pro- vide guidance and direction. This can in- clude establishing clear expectations and goals, communicating regularly with team members and being a good role model. Strong leaders also have the abil- ity to delegate tasks and responsibilities, which helps to create a sense of owner- ship and accountability within the team.
COMMON GOAL
The second key is having a common goal. It is important that everyone on the team understands what the goal is and why it is important. This can be achieved by having regular team meetings, discussing progress towards the goal and celebrating successes along the way. A common goal helps to cre- ate a sense of unity and purpose within the team, which can be a powerful motivator.
