Legal Dependents & Spouses
Legal dependents and spouses of full-time APUS employees are eligible for the established tuition
discount of 50% for the APUS doctoral program. However, per IRS regulations 100% of the tuition
discount utilized is taxable to the employee, regardless of the amount.

• Employees must complete the APUS Continuing Education Tax Questionnaire and
Continuing Education Application.
• The employee’s manager must review, approve, and authorize via a signature the
employee’s request to utilize this benefit each time the employee registers for a new
course(s), in order to ensure that the purpose described in the previous section and the
eligibility guidelines are satisfied. Where applicable, the relevant department head must
also review, approve and authorize via a signature.
• The manager and the department head (Director/AVP/VP) must approve the course(s) and

• The HR department will review all materials prepared and provided and assess whether the
requirements of this policy have been met and what portion, if any, of the costs incurred
will be considered a taxable benefit to the employee.
Emergency Leave for Evacuation and/or Loss of Primary Residence
APUS understands that emergency situations may occur, preventing employees from performing their
regular duties. This policy applies to Part-Time and Full-Time Staff.
Evacuation and/or uninhabitable home: In the event an employee’s primary residence is
included in an official pre-evacuation or evacuation area as determined by public safety officials
due to a natural disaster or other local emergency, the employee will be provided with up to five
(5) days of paid leave. If the employee’s home is officially deemed uninhabitable by safety
officials (such as FEMA or an insurance company) as a result of the disaster, the employee will
be provided with an additional five (5) days of paid leave. Employees may utilize other accrued
leave thereafter.
Loss of home: If an employee suffers the loss of his/her primary residence as officially declared
by safety officials (such as FEMA or an insurance company) as a result of a natural disaster, local
emergency, or fire, the employee will be provided with up to ten (10) days of paid leave, and
may use other accrued leave thereafter. Employees may be eligible for additional types of leave
depending upon the situation.
For the avoidance of doubt, an employee may receive a maximum of ten (10) days of paid leave per
event pursuant to this Emergency Leave Policy. All leave requests must be approved by management.
