The clouds became darker and the wind more fierce.
In an instant the force of the winds and lightning
knocked him down and he hit his head on a rock.
Fearing for his life, I ran towards him confused at
also hearing the voice of my cousin Anne Marie calling
me. I looked down and could see her and Joel’s car
stuck and sinking in the sand on 90 mile beach.

                                                          They were
                                                          making
                                                          perilous
                                                          attempts to free
                                                          their car as she
                                                          continued to
                                                          repeatedly call
                                                          to me .

Then I noticed Miss Grace standing at the bottom of
the hill waving her tokotoko in the air. Uncle Pineaha
was with her. I couldn’t tell if she was summoning the
storm or trying to calm it.

Ignoring them, I reach Pita and held him lovingly in
my arms. All I could think of was Pita. He appeared
unconscious, his hair clotted with blood where it had
            hit the rock.
As I held Pita with one arm, I instinctively raised
the other to the sky and began a karakia. My prayer was
                                                                         119
