It’s a Pumpkin Conspiracy
Don’t get me wrong, I really love this time of year. The mere fact that Carol actu-
ally allows candy to darken the doors of the Felix house (even if it is crappy candy
that she buys based on cost divided by number of pieces) is cause for celebration.
We generally go all out with Halloween decorations, allowing me to add to my ani-
mated collection of scary clowns and talking goblins each year – all broadcast live
on booming speakers. And last year’s highly successful Ironman costume will def-
initely make a reappearance. I’ve never had to pose with so many trick or treaters
— big and little — I felt like I was working at Disney World.
But let’s get back to the pumpkin problem, which tends to make its appearance
in late summer flavoring every conceivable food possible. But the worst is definite-
ly Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte. I may be wrong but after just one taste, I knew
… no vine was ever sacrificed in the making of that menu item. And don’t get Carol started on the pumpkin pancakes pop-
ping up everywhere. We had to leave IHOP because there were no pumpkin-free zones. I challenge anyone to enter a restau-
rant nowadays and not find at least one pumpkin menu option. It’s definitely time to bring on the turkeys for Thanksgiving
… and I don’t mean the politicians.
O.K., I do understand my pumpkin problem isn’t quite so earthshattering a phenomenon as our current midterm elections.
For us in Florida, in addition to assorted federal and state representatives and judges, we also get
to vote for a governor and U.S. Senator, each of whom will significantly impact our future way
of life and healthcare community. And much like too much pumpkin, I’ve endured way too
many political commercials and debates, mostly negative and many downright ridiculous. It’s
distressing to realize you can pinpoint in time when the line between healthy political dis-
courses got so far removed from reality and polarized. Never have I thought so seriously
about my grandchildren’s future world as I do today.
So, to be clear, for me there is no question that pumpkin (politics) has taken on an ugly
life of its own. In fact, I’d like to know who heads the Pumpkin Lobby. I will be first in line to
hire them, fire them and hope they disappear.
Happy Thanksgiving to one and all! (AND DON’T FORGET TO VOTE!)
