As far as I'm concerned, "whom" is a word
that was invented to make everyone
sound like a butler. - Calvin Trillin
I’m often asked how Carol and I have stayed together for more than 46 years
not only as a married couple, but for the last 14+ years as co-publishers as
well. Quite simply, neither one of us is too confrontational nor too concerned
with always being right or in my case, usually wrong. With desks situated a
mere 5 feet apart without benefit of partition, we both learned pretty quickly
that there’s a vast difference in hearing and listening. While Carol might hear
me constantly on the phone or mumbling to myself, she rarely registers the
content, so I’ve learned to clue her in on the important stuff and not take for
granted that she’s hanging on my every word … with one major exception …
my grammar or punctuation. I can be at the other end of the house, but let me
utter “for all intensive purposes” instead of “for all intents and purposes” or
“heigth” instead of “height,” and she’s suddenly listening!
And aside from sitting in such close proximity, we also are under visual
assault from the many, many signs that Carol has collected over the years. The
largest in the room is “The only thing more overrated
than natural childbirth, is the joy of owning your
own business.” But perhaps the one most apropos
for us is “Apparently There Is Nothing That Cannot
Happen Today.” Sometimes all you can do is
laugh.
Although being married to your business part-
ner may be considered “Risky Business,” the fore-
cast for SFHN&HR is bright!
