So, we can define shadow as follows:

“Shadow is a region of darkness, where light is
blocked. A shadow is formed on the opposite

            side of the light.”

Look at the picture carefully. You can see where

the source of light is and in which direction the
            shadow is formed.

                          WOW!

In olden days, people used to guess the time by looking at shadow of an object or

                        the sundial !

            Length of the Shadow

The length of a shadow keeps on changing during
the day. Shadows are long in the mornings and

evenings, while they are short at mid-day, when
the Sun is right above our heads.

All things do not cast shadows. The things
like glass that allow light to pass through

them do not cast a shadow. Solid things like
a piece of wood that blocks the path of light

                                                        can cast a shadow.

            Day and Night

When the Sun rises, it is day and when the Sun sets, it is night . The

Earth spins like a top. This movement of the Earth is called rotation .
Rotation of the Earth causes day and night.

When the Earth moves around the Sun,

the part of the Earth that faces the Sun has
day and the part away from the Sun has

            night.
                                                                                    Sunrise Sunset

                                                                84 Science-2
