8. Articles : A, An and The





          You know that there are 26 letters in the English alphabet.

          The letters  ,  ,  ,   and  are vowels                         . All other letters are called

          consonants A and               An are indefinite articles and they are used with

          nouns that are not definite. So,  and An                        means one or any.

          ‘a’ is used before words beginning with consonants or consonant

          sound. For example :

                 a  book                             a  horse                            a  car


                 a  door                             a  baby                             a  lamp

                 a  fish                             a  tree                             a  teacher


                 a  tube                             a  box                              a  banana

                 a  woman                            a  hut                              a  ball

          ‘an’ is used before words beginning with vowels or vowel sound.


          For example :

                 an   ox                             an   umbrella                       an   onion


                 an   egg                            an   insect                         an   engine

                 an   owl                            an   apple                          an   ice-cream


                 an   ass                            an   actor                          an   octopus

                 ‘an’   is used before words beginning with silent ‘h’.
