‘The’ is used :

1. with a noun that represents the whole class or type.

(a) The cow is a useful animal. (means all cows)

(b) The tiger runs fast. (means all tigers)

2. with a unique noun.

(a) The Earth revolves around the Sun.

(b) The Sun is a ball of fire.

(c) The Moon shines at night.

3. with the names of rivers, mountains, oceans, etc.

(a) The Yamuna (b) The Himalayas

(c) The Pacific Ocean (d) The Ganga

4. with the names of newspapers and magazines.

(a) The India Today (b) The Times of India
