the parent plant. On the ground, animals and birds eat fallen seeds and fruits.
Seeds and fruits are also distributed to large distances after the food is digested
and undigested food in feaces.
4. If one component is removed from a food chain, will it affect our ecosystem? Explain.
Ans: If one component is removed from a food chain, it can cause significant impacts.
Each species in a food chain relies on others for food & their interactions are essential
for maintaining balance. For example, if a predator disappears, the population of
its prey may increase rapidly, leading to overconsumption of plants & disruption of
vegetation. This affects other animals & can even lead to disrupting nutrient cycles,
etc.
5. Forest is a dynamic entity, full of life and vitality. Explain this statement briefly.
Ans: A forest is a dynamic entity, full of life and vitality because it is always changing and
growing. It is home to a wide variety of plants, animals and microorganisms that
interact with each other in complex ways.
Trees grow, produce leaves & eventually die, which provides nutrients to the soil &
supports new plant growth.
Animals help by pollinating plants & breaking down dead material.
Forest can also adapt to changes in the environment, such as recovering after a fire.
This continuous cycle of growth and renewal makes forest vibrant and full of like.
6. What are scavengers? Explain their role in our ecosystem.
Ans: Scavengers are animals that eat dead plants and animals.
They play an important role in our ecosystem by cleaning up & recycling organic
material.
When an animal dies, scavengers like vultures, hyenas & insects such as beetles &
flies quickly find & consume the remains. This helps prevent the spread of diseases
& keeps the environment clean. As scavengers break down dead matter, they release
nutrients back into the soil, which helps plants grow. In this way, scavengers contribute
to the cycle of life by ensuring that nutrients are reused & distributed throughout the
ecosystem.
7. How can we conserve forests?
Ans: • Illegal logging of trees for timber should be made punishable.
• Overgrazing by cattle should be prevented by providing sufficient pastures in
the areas near forests.
• Steps should be taken to educate people and make them aware of the importance
of forests.
