• Afforestation or planting of trees should be encouraged. Trees should be planted

in wastelands where the forest cover is disappearing
                      • Land for agriculture should be planned and used wisely.

                      • Deterioration of forests happen as a result of unnecessary forest clearances.
Therefore, they must be checked and avoided at any cost.

                      • The major loss of forests is mostly because of a forest fire. Man-made fire
disturbs the whole ecosystem leading to the increase in global warming.

                  8. Write the ill effects of deforestation.
Ans: The ill effects of deforestation are :

                      • Soil erosion: Trees hold the soil in place with their roots. If trees are uprooted,
soil is washed away by running water.

                      • Landslide: Without roots holding the soil in place, land becomes unstable
                            thereby resulting in

                      • Landslides, causing large-scale destruction to land and property.
                      • Temperature increase: Deforestation causes increase in greenhouse gases,

which leads to global warming. It may also result in imbalance between carbon
                            dioxide and oxygen.

                      • Problem to indigenous communities: Clearing of forests threatens the life of
indigenous people who live and depend on the forests to sustain their way of

                            life.
                      • Drought: Forests help to bring rain by transpiration. In the absence of forests,

there will be less rain which will lead to droughts.
                      • Desertification: Cutting down of forests leads to soil erosion as no plants are

left to hold the soil. This makes the land infertile, which in turn may result in
                            desertification.

                      • No food or shelter: If forests disappear, there will be shortage of food and
habitat for animals and result in their extinction. It may also result in reduction

of basic resources for human beings.
