Creativity,	Innovation,	and	Risk

People of a certain age long to discover the mythical fountain of youth. In a
similar vein, businesspeople want to crack the code on how to isolate and then
implant the creativity gene within the corporate workforce. In the current
business zeitgeist of high-velocity, technology-fueled change, corporate leaders
live in constant dread of falling behind. Their nightmare scenario: becoming
yesterday’s	discard	in	the	wake	of	an	ascendant	rival’s	sudden	appearance	on	the
horizon with the next shiny new thing. They become obsessed with fostering a
corporate	culture	of	perpetual	creativity.	“Thinking	outside	the	box”	is	a	mantra,
as is risk. And the topic of “innovation” is a mainstay of business media. Ideas
can	often	be	the	difference	between	stagnation	and	success.

Innovation	is	the	specific	instrument	of	entrepreneurship	…	the	act	that	endows
resources	with	a	new	capacity	to	create	wealth.

—Peter F. Drucker, management consultant, educator, and author (from his book Innovation and
            Entrepreneurship,	1985)

The	heart	and	soul	of	the	company	is	creativity	and	innovation.

—Bob	Iger,	chairman	and	CEO,	Walt	Disney	Co.
