“black walnut kisses” also ordered a ten-pound package. Word got around the
college town and soon orders came to the girl from the mothers of some of
the local college students. The walnuts were mailed from home in ten-pound
packages and she put them up in cellophane bags as her aunt in Chicago had
done.

The sister in Chicago was a “live wire.” She called upon bakeries and upon
confectioners, upon local specialty food shops, and soon had worked up a
good list of customers. Many of these firms ordered direct because they
wanted to secure larger quantities and correspondingly lower prices. Others
continued to purchase their needs locally from the sister.

Why do not more farm families do this sort of thing? And why do not more
city folks who would like to make a thousand dollars, arrange with people
living on farms to market the particularly fine things they grow? A young
man in Winnetka, Illinois, made a tidy sum of money taking orders for
California figs which he cleared through a fig grower in the Santa Clara
Valley. A chap in Atlanta earned well over a thousand dollars last year by
selling Florida Key limes to local soda fountains and fancy grocery stores. He
secured limes grown on Captiva Island just off Fort Myers. Any number of
fancy food products, such as these, can be sold at a nice profit by anyone who
is not afraid of work.

NE Saturday afternoon, E. A. Huntley was busily washing his car in
“gasoline alley,” when a young chap came up to him and said: “I believe that
car would look better if it were simonized.” Huntley agreed. “It certainly
would, but it costs about $5.00 or $6.00 and I don’t feel like spending that
much right now.” The young man produced an inexpensive card on which
was printed in the center the one word “Simonizing.” In the lower left-hand
corner was his name, address and telephone number.
