What Is Low Back Pain?
Low back pain affects the back in the
area below the ribs and above the
legs. The lower back connects the
upper and lower body. This area bears
most of the body’s weight and is very
susceptible to injury.

What Causes
Low Back Pain?
There are many causes of low back
pain. The most common causes are:
• Strain/Sprain – an overstretching of the muscles and/or
ligaments due to activity without sufficient preparation,
such as yard work or snow shoveling. The low back may
also be strained by something as simple as carrying/
lifting groceries.
• Herniated disk – caused by poor body mechanics when
lifting, bending, pulling, or twisting. The herniation of the
disk is when the soft center of the disk pushes against or
protrudes through the firmer outer ring. The slipping of
the disk puts pressure on the spinal nerve causing pain
into the leg which is most commonly called sciatica.
