P. 3

The SIDE KICK is performed by tightening the
side hip muscles and lifting the leg sideways.
Repeat the movement ten (10) times, two to
three times per day.
Most minor hip problems will heal on their own,
and home treatment may be all that is needed
to relieve symptoms and promote healing.
However, serious leg problems also may occur
and require prompt evaluation by a doctor.
When Should I Call My Doctor?
If you have new hip pain that is not debilitating or severe, a good
rule of thumb is to try to treat yourself first. Rest, ice and elevation
of the affected hip is the first line of defense. More immediate
medical care is required if you:
• Have persistent pain
• Cannot bear weight on your leg
• See an obvious deformity in your thigh and hip
• Have a fever in addition to redness, pain and persistent
swelling in your hip/thigh that may indicate infection.
Decision Guide For Hip And Thigh Pain
Use self-care; rest, ice, elevate if:
• Overuse or injury pain that lasts less than 7 days.
See your physician if:
• Pulled or torn muscle causing tenderness to the touch,
stiffness, pain, or difficulty walking, running, or climbing stairs.
• Pain on outside of hip, possibly down to the knee.
• Swelling, pain, or stiffness after a blow to the thigh.
