L ES S ON NARRATI VE TEX T
1
A narrative text is a type of text that tells a story or recounts a series of
events. It is a form of writing that aims to entertain, inform, or engage the
reader by presenting a sequence of connected events or experiences.
Narrative texts can be found in various forms such as novels, short stories,
folktales, fables, myths, legends, and even personal anecdotes.
The primary elements of a narrative text include characters, setting, plot,
and point of view:
1. Characters → Characters are the individuals or entities that drive the
story. They can be people, animals, or even inanimate objects.
Characters have different roles and characteristics that contribute to the
development of the narrative.
2. Setting → The setting refers to the time and place where the story takes
place. It provides the backdrop or context for the events and helps
create a sense of atmosphere or mood.
3. Plot → The plot is the sequence of events that occur in the narrative. It
usually follows a structure that includes an introduction or exposition
(setting the scene and introducing the characters), a rising action
(building tension and conflict), a climax (the turning point or highest
point of tension), a falling action (resolving the conflict), and a conclusion
(wrapping up the story).
4. Point of View → The point of view determines who is telling the story
and from what perspective. It can be first-person (using "I" or "we" and
told from the narrator's perspective), third-person limited (using "he,"
"she," or character names and focusing on the thoughts and feelings of
one character), or third-person omniscient (providing insights into the
thoughts and feelings of multiple characters).
Narrative texts often incorporate literary devices such as dialogue,
descriptions, imagery, figurative language, and symbolism to enhance the
storytelling and engage the reader's imagination. They can evoke emotions,
convey messages, explore themes, and offer insights into human
experiences.
