3. INNOVATIONS

Mechanization of Manual Loco Turn Table
WDG4 HHP diesel locos are provided with single driver cabin. During

MU, Driver cabin should be in leading position. Hence, the locos
were sent to KZJ chord line for turning the direction of loco (i.e. for
driver cabin in leading position). Due to traffic constraints, turning of
loco used to take more time and also wastage of crew.
Hence, Loco turn table was sanctioned under Augmentation works
of 100 locos to 150 locos vide PB no – 615/15-16. The same is
constructed and completed on July-19 at a sanctioned cost of Rs
               69,66,223/-.

But the above turn table has to be rotated manually after
placement of locomotive. This involved requirement of huge man
power i.e. 10 to 12 man power are utilised to rotate the turn table
               and was strenuous in nature.

Hence, the manual transmission was converted into motorised
transmission with in-house resources as detailed below:
               1) Gear box with DC motor of old condemned Jumbo trolley was
removed and utilised duly overhauling the same in-house.
               2) An arrangement was developed and manufactured in-house to
couple the gear box along with motor to manual transmission.
               3) The supply to DC motor is given by use of 04 nos of loco batteries

and these batteries are charged utilising an external battery
               charging unit.
               4) Required control equipment is assembled in-house and necessary
contactors are provided to rotate the turn table in either direction
               i.e. clockwise and anti-clockwise direction.
               5) Approximately an amount of Rs 7,500/- was incurred on providing

the motorised arrangement for the manual arrangement of turn
               table.
               6) This has resulted in savings of approximately Rs 2.5 to 3 lakhs for
provision of new motorised arrangement apart from saving the man
power that is utilised to rotate the turn table.
