Ontario Secondary School Diploma Requirements
Students must earn the following compulsory credits to obtain the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD):
COMPULSORY CREDITS (TOTAL OF 18):
● 4 credits in English (1 credit per grade)
● 1 credit in French as a second language
● 3 credits in Mathematics (at least one credit in Grade 11 or 12)
● 2 credits in Science
● 1 credit in Canadian History
● 1 credit in Canadian Geography
● 1 credit in The Arts
● 1 credit in Health and Physical Education
● 1 credit in Civics and Career Studies (0.5 credit in Career Studies, 0.5 credit in Civics)
In addition to the compulsory credits, students must complete:
● 1 additional credit selected from English, or a third language, or a Social Science, or from Canadian and World Studies
● 1 additional credit selected from Health and Physical Education or Business Studies or the Arts (Music, Art, Drama, or Dance)
● 1 additional credit selected from Science (Grade 11 or 12) or Technological Education (Grades 9 to 12)
Elective Credits (Total of 12)
Any 12 additional credits may be taken to complete the student's program. A credit is granted upon the successful completion of a course that has been scheduled for a minimum of 110 hours.
Community Service
A minimum of 40 hours of community involvement is required in order to qualify for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
Adding, Dropping, or Changing a Course
Prior to the start of the semester, students will select their courses in consultation with their parents and GuidanceCounselor,basedinpartbytheirpost-secondaryplans.Allstudentsrequire30creditsinorder to obtain their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Among the required credits is Grade 12 English- University level, which also is needed in order to be considered for admission to all Ontario universities. Other courses may be required for a particular program or degree.
For example, a student that intends to apply to a Commerce/Business program at an Ontario university must take Advanced Functions (MHF4U), Calculus & Vectors (MCV4U) and English (ENG4U), plus three additional U (university pathway) courses. In some cases, a course is only offered as an M (Mixed university and college).
