Your task : Read the text and try to understand. Then do the activities.
Reading comprehension strategies
Read the title and predict what the text might be about.
Look at any illustration. What do they tell you about the topic ?
Look at the text over and note its lenght, organization, source to identify the type of
document. Pay attention to the punctuation.
Read for gist (= read the text to get the general idea of its content : who ? What ?
When ? WHere ?)
Read a second time – more closely.
Read the questions completely
Scan the text to look for answers only one question at a time.
When you come to a word you don’t know, try to infer (deduce ; guess) its meaning by
examining the context clues or the word parts (suffixes, prefixes, root words).
Dictionaries should only be used as a last resort
Then check the correction and fill in your What I learned Box with the new vocabulary.
