Footsteps of History
The Battle of Franklin was the last major confrontation in the Civil War
involving a massive assault that was larger than Pickett’s Charge at
Gettysburg. The resulting five hours of fighting are now seen by most
scholars as the bloodiest hours of the Civil War with over 9,500 soldiers
losing their lives.
Today, Franklin, Tennessee is home to the largest Civil War Battlefield
reclamation project in the United States. Your visit to Franklin will feature a
deeply personal journey into the effects the battle and its aftermath had on
two families that lived through it.
At Carnton you will learn the story of the McGavock family who had their
home commandeered during the battle to be made into a field hospital that
cared for hundreds of wounded and dying soldiers. At the Carter House you
will discover the harrowing experience the Carter family lived through as
the battle raged in and around their home.
